Doug and Tamra Wyman make business personal with Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical

The Right Fit

Doug and Tamra Wyman make business personal with Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical.

Known around town for their blue school buses, the Wymans are doing things differently with Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical. 85086 Magazine recently sat down with the pair to find out more about their business.

What were the circumstances surrounding you opening your business?

I was helping run the family online retail business and Doug Wyman had been doing plumbing/ HVAC in Colorado for 17 years. After 25 years of cold weather conditions and a new baby on the way, it was family and sunshine that brought us to Arizona. Once we moved to Anthem, we took a leap of faith and started services as a licensed plumbing company serving the North Valley.

Why did you decide to open your business in the North Valley?

Doug and I grew up in a small town of 1,200 people in Mancos, Colorado. When making our move to Arizona, we loved that the North Valley has that same small town feel where everyone is part of a community. We wanted to grow our business in that same environment where you are helping a neighbor. Our tagline has been “Your friendly neighborhood plumber” since our doors opened and that is the kind of service we like to provide to our neighbors.

What are some of the most challenging aspects of running your business?

As is common with most trades, finding qualified help is always a challenge. We feel very grateful for our team. Everyone lives here in the area and loves being able to work their trade close to home among neighbors.

What differentiates your business from your competitors?

Our blue school buses, haha! We are a small business. My husband and I manage all the day-to-day operations. It is myself that will always answer the phone. Although I don’t always get to see faces, I still know most of my customers by name. In addition, you don’t have to worry about our technicians pushing new sales since we do not pay sales commissions as most plumbing companies do. We will push repairs instead of replacements, if that is the best option. If it is beyond repair or not worth the investment, our plumbers will let you know your options and you can rest assured they are not trying to sell you something for their gain. They are educators and not salesmen.

Do you participate in any local philanthropic efforts?

Yes, we have supported a handful of organizations, schools, sports team, and local fundraisers such as Boulder Creek High School, ACTS of Anthem, Caurus Academy, Cactus Shadows High School, and more. Our community supports us and we believe in supporting it.

What does the future hold for your business?

Water is life. And with this in mind, we will continue to find new ways to make it better and discover new ways to bring the benefits of water to your home both inside and outside.

What’s one of your favorite memories/experiences as an Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce member?

We have received so much by becoming a chamber member. I remember when Wyman Plumbing first started, a local business owner recommended joining the chamber. I followed his recommendation, but never did I anticipate what followed. Everything from meeting new friends, learning about upcoming events and groups within our community at morning meetings, attending evening mixers where we can see everyone cut loose, supporting new business owners at ribbon cuttings, applauding hard working members as they accept their awards at the Winter Gala ceremony, watching the community come together for fun at the Luau or joining in some friendly competition at the Veteran’s Community Picnic and Cornhole Tournament…there are so many great memories and we look forward to them year after year!

Best words of wisdom you’ve received?

My dad told me to watch the “Just Do It” speech by Art Williams as a kid. In short, it says if you want to win in these United States, you got to be tough and you can’t quit. If you want to win in business, you have to be a leader. You show me a successful church, Boy Scout troop, club, football team, or business…I’ll show you something run by a leader. You don’t have to be smart to win. Almost everybody in America almost does enough to win. They almost get there, they almost get over the hump, they almost have it done… but the winners do it. They do whatever it takes to get the job done. They do it and do it and do it and do it and do it…until the job gets done.
